A Challenging ConditionUnfortunately, some individuals with AMD may have moderate to severe visual impairment that disrupts the ability to see well enough to go about their daily activities. When central vision becomes distorted or absent, reading can become very challenging or impossible. Even recognizing faces of people you know can be problematic and frustrating. This type of visual impairment occurs in the advanced, or late stage, of both the wet or dry forms of AMD. A New DevelopmentPresently, an investigational visual prosthetic device, the Implantable Miniature Telescope (IMT by Dr. Isaac Lipshitz), is being developed and evaluated by VisionCare Ophthalmic Technologies. This medical device is designed to improve vision and quality of life for patients with late stage AMD. The device is implanted into one eye by an ophthalmologist in a brief outpatient procedure. The implanted telescope magnifies images onto the patient's retina to help capture more central vision. This may provide patients with an improved ability to recognize objects that were previously either difficult or impossible to see, and have less difficulty performing everyday activities and hobbies. The investigational device is being evaluated in a clinical research study being conducted at several leading medical centers and ophthalmology clinics across the United States. If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with late stage AMD and are interested in obtaining more information about the study, please view our CLINICAL TRIAL link, or consult with an ophthalmologist.
